Of all the great four and five star reviews we’ve received (see them here) the one that Raymond Briggs was most approving of was in The Evening Standard. Charlotte O’Sullivan ended her piece with the following paragraph.
“Though this incredibly moving film is full of lovely, antique words (Ernest calls Ethel a “daft ha’porth”; his pet name for Raymond is “boysy”), it doesn’t paint the past in pastel colours. If Ethel & Ernest becomes a Christmas fixture, it will be a reminder that national treasures have the power to make and break tradition. Briggs is an iconoclast in sheep’s clothing. God bless ’im.”
The ‘iconoclast in sheep’s clothing’ line received Raymond’s particular attention and pleasure.
