John Coates (1927 – 2012)

We are very sad to report the death of producer John Coates on 16th September 2012 aged 84.
John and his company TVC were the driving force behind getting the Ethel and Ernest film started. The project was very dear to his heart and he invested
a large amount of his time and money into its pre-production development. This included creating a 90 minute animatic/storyboard and
overseeing voice recordings with the lead actors played by Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn.
Camilla Deakin of Lupus films took over as producer of Ethel and Ernest earlier this year. Originally appointed by John as an executive producer she has been working closely with him on the project since the start. Raymond Briggs and Robbie Little remain as executive producers.
When it came to film production John banned the word “if” from the conversation. It was always “when”. The Ethel and Ernest production team is as determined as ever to get the film financed and made into a fitting tribute to John. He really was one of the greatest producers in the history of British animation – and a lovely man. He will be sorely missed.
